Concept of Sickness- An excerpt from "The art of listening" by Erich Fromm

Most people today have lost their subjective faculty. They can only see things as one says realistically, in the first sense, that is to say they know the world very well as it can be manipulated. But they are not capable of seeing something whether that's something in nature or person, fully subjectively, without any other purpose except the experience of this sight, this sound, this picture.
The concept of sickness is essentially social. If somebody is an idiot, is an emotional idiot, an artistic idiot, he doesnt understand a thing, he is not capable of seeing anything except the practical value of cents, then we call him today a very clever man. And these are the men who are most successful, because they are never distracted as Charlie Chaplin is in the film by the pretty girl who comes while he is working on the machines, and so he loses his grip on the machine, on the endless belt. If you feel nothing, if you have no subjective experience, then you are best fit for society in which everything that matters is to perform, to perform practically. But you are for that reason not any healthier.
The question is open who is more sick, the so-called psychotic person or the so-called realistic person.

we need to ask another question, who is more 'successful'?

Right! But then we need to ask - ow do we rate success? What are the characteristics of being successful? Is it moneywise, famewise? or ..

that was precisely what I wanted to say.. and of course there isn't a definite answer...

Hi,

Good one on Concept of Sickness- An excerpt from "The art of listening by Erich Fromm".I recently found out 1 million children are accidentally poisoned in their homes each year. And also I did find the toxins we use in our home here www.debtfreeliving.healthyhometour.com.I think it's time we all know about the toxins we use.

Thanks,
